About the gathering

The evening begins in conversation with Julian Rosefeldt, followed by a screening of Euphoria.

Euphoria (2016-22) is a surreal journey through two thousand years of economic thought and human greed. Rosefeldt brings Sophocles, Plato, Karl Marx, Ursula K. Le Guin, bell hooks, Angela Davis, Snoop Dogg, and Cardi B into the same unruly stream of thought, asking why capitalism remains so seductive even when we understand its consequences.

Across a dystopian New York and other imagined worlds, economic theory becomes cinema. A taxi driver moves through the city at night. A tiger with the voice of Cate Blanchett loots a supermarket. Marginalized characters inhabit landscapes shaped by neoliberal ideas, while a score performed by 150 singers and five jazz drummers moves between spectacle, absurdity, and unease.

About the artist

Julian Rosefeldt is a Berlin-based artist and filmmaker whose meticulously staged film and video installations examine the structures and beliefs that shape society. Trained as an architect, he approaches film through composition, scale, and spatial choreography, using humor, satire, and theatricality to explore ideology, history, capitalism, and identity.

His work has been presented internationally and is held in major collections including The Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Nationalgalerie, Berlin, and the National Gallery of Australia. Since 2011, Rosefeldt has been Professor of Digital and Time-Based Media at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Munich.
