Exquisite Encrucijada

November 2026 - February 2027

FuturePast

What becomes possible when we imagine beyond the realities we know?

Exquisite Encrucijada takes the crossroads as its point of departure, a point of convergence and a moment of choice. Artists enter from distinct positions, bringing works that engage imagination, consciousness, identity, belief, desire, freedom, and transformation.

Dreams, symbolism, memory, ideology, embodiment, spirituality, and selfhood surface throughout. Some works turn inward, toward private states of consciousness, desire, and perception. Others engage the narratives, economic systems, structures of belief, and cultural myths that organize collective life.

Presented over several months, Exquisite Encrucijada unfolds through individual exhibitions, performances, screenings, conversations, music, literature, and gatherings. Each stands on its own while contributing a distinct perspective to the larger curatorial inquiry.

Across these individual presentations, affinities, tensions, and contradictions emerge between artistic practices and ideas. The crossroads resides in this multiplicity, in the different positions from which artists approach fundamental questions about how we understand ourselves and the realities we inhabit.

About the gathering

La Fábrica Subin begins at a crossroads: between art and life, the imagined and the lived, the intimate and the collective, what we know and what we have yet to discover. On November 27, we gather there for the first time, opening Exquisite Encrucijada, a series of exhibitions, performances, conversations, and gatherings unfolding through February.

For this first gathering, Julian Rosefeldt explores desire, freedom, and the social structures that shape them through Deep Gold. The Long Table turns dinner into another field of exploration. Laura Kirar's Calling turns toward presence, symbol, and ritual. Music and dancing carry the celebration into the night.

Deep Gold

Julian Rosefeldt

What happens when desire meets the structures that seek to contain, direct, or exploit it?

Deep Gold (2013/14) revisits Luis Buñuel's L'Âge d'Or (1930), placing its tensions between desire and social constraint within a contemporary landscape of sexual freedom, feminism, and economic inequality. Shot in black and white, the film asks what has changed since Buñuel challenged the sexual repression and bourgeois morality of his time, and what forms of constraint persist today.

Calling

Laura Kirar

Back at La Fábrica Subin, Laura Kirar activates Calling in Estudio 01.

Calling is centered on two raku ceramic vessels, one holding water and the other fire, resting on a structure of alamo root dressed in gold leaf and illuminated by blue light. Metal cymbals encircle the vessels, each marked with GLYPH, Kirar's visual language of approximately thirty symbols. Each carries a meaning and, in combination, the symbols can be read or interpreted by those familiar with the language. Touch and movement set the cymbals sounding.

Kirar conceived Calling as a means of summoning presence. Sound, resonance, remembrance, and place converge through an experience that asks for participation. There is mystery in the elements, their placement, and the sounds released through interaction. That mystery extends to the purpose of the call itself: who, or what, is being called?

Her social practice extends this inquiry through collaborations with makers and traditions rooted in Yucatán, where she is based.

Kirar studied sculpture and interior architecture at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Over more than twenty-five years, she has developed an internationally recognized multidisciplinary practice. About the gathering

The evening begins in conversation with Julian Rosefeldt, followed by a screening of Euphoria.

Euphoria (2016-22) is a surreal journey through two thousand years of economic thought and human greed. Rosefeldt brings Sophocles, Plato, Karl Marx, Ursula K. Le Guin, bell hooks, Angela Davis, Snoop Dogg, and Cardi B into the same unruly stream of thought, asking why capitalism remains so seductive even when we understand its consequences.

Across a dystopian New York and other imagined worlds, economic theory becomes cinema. A taxi driver moves through the city at night. A tiger with the voice of Cate Blanchett loots a supermarket. Marginalized characters inhabit landscapes shaped by neoliberal ideas, while a score performed by 150 singers and five jazz drummers moves between spectacle, absurdity, and unease.

About the gathering

Following a residency at Hacienda Subin, Katinka Kleijn shares new work developed through her time at the hacienda, La Fábrica Subin, and the surrounding landscape.

Kleijn's practice begins by bringing bodies, instruments, materials, environments, and other people into unexpected relationships, then following what those encounters make possible. At La Fábrica Subin, sound, material, architecture, weather, and circumstance become part of that process. What emerges will be shared for the first time through performance and installation.

The evening offers a chance to encounter the work at the point of emergence, shaped by Kleijn's experimentation and her experience of this particular place.

The Desert Of The Bathtub

Carn Crua

January 2027

About the gathering

A bathtub crosses an endless desert, carrying a woman, a song, and a journey with no destination.

In The Desert of the Bathtub, Carn Crua inhabits this shifting world, singing fantastical truths as dreams repeat and reinterpret themselves through a loop of song. The thirty-minute performance is drawn from Exquisite Corpse Continuum, a surrealist opera in development by Laura Kirar.

The bathtub becomes instrument, refuge, vehicle, and stage. Poetry emerges from its walls, unexpected discoveries defy familiar logic, and familiar reference points begin to shift. Suspended between the absurd and the unknown, the performance opens a space where imagination alters what feels possible.

An Antidote to Me

Kieren Gadhia

Saturday, February 20th 2027

About the gathering

An Antidote to Me: Essays on Being and Becoming Whole begins with an elemental question: how to be. Moving between prose, poetry, philosophy, and personal reflection, Gadhia considers how a self takes shape, what we inherit, what we pursue, and what we come to recognize as our own.

The book traces an inward journey from striving toward presence and toward a reconciliation of mind and body, masculine and feminine, self and Self. At La Fábrica Subin, Gadhia will read selected passages and open a conversation around the question at the heart of the book: what becomes possible when we begin to know ourselves more fully?

Righteous Rage

Rebekah Heller

Saturday, February 27th 2027

About the gathering

Following a residency with La Fábrica Subin, Rebekah Heller performs selections from Righteous Rage, her 2026 project built around the possibilities of the bassoon in multiplicity.

After more than a decade commissioning new solo works, Heller turned toward the experience of playing with other bassoonists. She began building a repertoire for bassoon choir, commissioning new works and reimagining existing compositions for many bassoons. In Righteous Rage, Heller performs every voice herself through multitracking, transforming a single instrumental voice into an ensemble.

The project brings together music by Julius Eastman, Steve Reich, Jessie Cox, Fay Victor, and Brittany J. Green. Green's Righteous Rage, which gives the project its title, was commissioned by Heller in conversation with Eastman's The Holy Presence of Joan d'Arc and brings a fierce urgency to questions of the world being passed from one generation to the next.

At La Fábrica Subin, Heller brings this layered body of work into live performance, inviting us to encounter the bassoon as many voices at once.

About

Rebekah Heller

Rebekah Heller is a virtuosic bassoonist, conductor, and composer who has spent her career reconsidering what a bassoonist can be. Stepping away from a conventional orchestral path, she built a practice around living composers, commissioning, improvisation, and experimentation, treating the bassoon as territory still open to discovery. Her work moves through electronics, ensemble, and performance, at times incorporating space, memory, clothing, and light to expand how the instrument can be played, heard, and encountered.

Heller has appeared as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic, Nagoya Philharmonic, and New World Symphony. The New Yorker has called her "an impressive solo bassoonist," and The New York Times has praised her "flair." A longtime member and Co-Artistic Director Emerita of the International Contemporary Ensemble, she has helped bring hundreds of new works into being. She teaches bassoon and improvisation at Mannes School of Music at The New School. Her 2026 album, Righteous Rage, pushes further into the possibilities of an instrument she continues to reinvent.
