About the gathering

Following a residency at Hacienda Subin, Katinka Kleijn shares new work developed through her time at the hacienda, La Fábrica Subin, and the surrounding landscape.

Kleijn's practice begins by bringing bodies, instruments, materials, environments, and other people into unexpected relationships, then following what those encounters make possible. At La Fábrica Subin, sound, material, architecture, weather, and circumstance become part of that process. What emerges will be shared for the first time through performance and installation.

The evening offers a chance to encounter the work at the point of emergence, shaped by Kleijn's experimentation and her experience of this particular place.

About the artist

Katinka Kleijn is a Dutch-born cellist and interdisciplinary artist whose practice moves between improvisation, composition, and performance art. Classically trained, she places the cello in unexpected contexts to explore relationships between instrument and body, sound and environment, performer and audience. Her work has involved submerged cellos, shared electrical circuits, brainwaves, film, and collective improvisation.

A member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and International Contemporary Ensemble, Kleijn has performed as a soloist with major orchestras and presented work at Lincoln Center, the Library of Congress, and the Chicago Humanities Festival. The New York Times has called her "a player of formidable expressive gifts."
